Your data, your browser

Location

The "Auto check-in" feature on event pages can suggest checking in when you're within a configurable radius of the event address. That distance is calculated in your browser and is only active while you have it enabled — you can turn it off at any time on the event page.

Separately, when "Share location" is on, your coordinates are sent to our server with the request that loads tastings, so results can be sorted nearest-first. They are used to answer that request and nothing else: not written to the database, not kept in logs, and never passed to analytics or any third party.

Presence at events

If you tap "I'm here now," we send an anonymous presence ping to a real-time service so other attendees can see a live count for that event. We don't store who checked in — pings are kept in memory and dropped when you leave. Your own device remembers which tastings you've checked in to (in its local storage, until each tasting ends) so a page reload or a brief signal drop doesn't un-check you; "Reset all data" in Settings clears this too.

Tasting leaderboard

Ranking pours at a tasting stays on your device by default. If you tap "Submit & see leaderboard," your ranking (the order of wines, not your name) is sent to our server and folded into that stop's anonymous leaderboard, alongside a randomly generated device id used only to let you resubmit without creating duplicates — and, when this device loads a leaderboard, to recognise your own earlier submission so the page doesn't ask you to submit twice. It identifies the device, never you. Results only show once enough people have submitted, so no individual ranking is ever singled out. The "Show QR" code on a waiting leaderboard encodes only the public event link — the same address any share sends — and says nothing about you or your device to whoever scans it.

You can take it back. Removing a tasting under Past tastings offers to withdraw that submission, which deletes the row outright — it's a deliberate tick-box rather than the default, because the ranking is anonymous and withdrawing it re-locks the results for everyone else still waiting. Worth being precise about the rest: removing a tasting, or "Reset all data" in Settings, only clears this device — a ranking you submitted earlier stays on its leaderboard until you withdraw it.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which pages and features are useful. This includes page paths, referrer, in-app actions (like RSVPs, notes, and searches), coarse device and browser info, and approximate location derived from your IP. We do not sell data and do not build advertising profiles. The contents of your notes and your precise location are never sent to analytics.

Third parties

Maps and directions are powered by Mapbox; tile and route requests go directly to Mapbox and are subject to their privacy policy. Outbound links to Fine Wine & Good Spirits or other sites are governed by those sites.
